Common Name:

Distribution:

Provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Sichuan, Guizhou, Shandong of China

Properties (characteristics)

性味 ﹔

bitter, sour, cool

苦﹐酸﹐涼。

liver, spleen

肝﹐脾。

Medical Function:

藥理 ﹕

  1. anti-spastic

  2. lowers blood pressure, dilates peripheral blood vessels, lower resistant

  3. dilates coronary arteries

  4. anticonvulsant, analgesic, sedative effect

  5. antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic

  6. neutralizes the carcinogenic effect of aflatoxins

  1. 解痙

  2. 降血壓,能擴張外周血管,降低外周阻力

  3. 擴張冠狀動脈

  4. 鎮靜、鎮痛及抗驚厥

  5. 解熱、抗炎及抗菌

  6. 對致癌物質黃霉素有解毒作用。

Actions & Indications:

主治 ﹕

Bai shao is being used for removing sludge in the blood and as a mild analgesic. For menstrual dysfunction, vagina yeast infection, uterine bleeding. Lessens liver yang ascending , alleviates abdominal pain. For headache and dizziness due to  yang ascending. For spermatorrhea. For pain in abdomen and diarrhea. For common cold and flu. (as in gui zhi tang, ma huang tang)

Chi shao yao has a much stronger effect in removing blood stasis . It is being used more often than bai shao in injuries like broken bones, dislocated joints, sprains and injuries from impacts also in blood clots. Do not use chi shao after giving birth. It is use as a tonic, pain killer, diuretic and for ridding of gas from stomach and intestine and for child birth difficulty.

Dosage:

用量 ﹕

6 ~ 15 grams

6~15 克。

Chemical ingredients:

paeoniflorin, paeonol, paeonin, albiflorin, triterpenoids, sistosterol, oxypaeoniflorin, benzoylpaeoniflorin, benzoic acid, β sitosterol, gallotannin, pedunculagin, 1-O-Galloylpedunculagin , eugeniin,  tannin acid, fat, essential oil, resin, sugar, starch, and protein.

Modern use:

現代 應用﹕

Being used in:

  1. muscle spasm of limbs, back and neck, face. Jerky legs.

  2. relieving pain,

  3. bone spurs of the heels,

  4. viral hepatitis,

  5. chronic constipation,

  6. asthma,

  7. whooping coughs,

  8. diabetes,

  9. ulcer of duodenum and stomach.

用于﹕

  1. 肌肉痙 攣﹕四肢﹐頸部﹐背部﹐臉﹐腿不安。

  2. 止痛。

  3. 腳跟骨刺。

  4. 病毒性肝炎。

  5. 慢性便秘。

  6. 哮喘。

  7. 百日咳。

  8. 糖尿病。

  9. 十二指腸與胃之潰瘍。

bai zhu shao yao san 白朮芍藥散,

dang gui jian zhong tang 當歸健中湯,

gui zhi tang 桂枝湯

ma huang tang 麻黃湯

shi quan da bu tang 十全大補湯

si wu tang 四物湯,

ren shen yang rong tang 人參養榮湯

Cautions:

 

禁忌

 

do not use in case of pain in abdomen or/with diarrhea due to pixu (spleen deficient) .

  脾虛 腹痛泄瀉者忌服。
