Pharmaceutical name:Cortex Phellodendri
Biological name:Phellodendro amurense Rupr. or Phellodendro chinense Schneid.
Pron. in Japanese:obaku
Pron. in Korean:kwangbaek
Pron. in Cantonese:wong pak
Common Name:amur cork-tree bark
Distribution:Liaoning, Jilin, Hebei (P. amurense), Sichuan, Guizhou, Hubei, Yunnan (P. chinense)
Properties (characteristics)性味﹕bitter, cold


Channels (meridians) entered:kidney bladder
Actions & Indications:


Rid of damp heat, especially in the xiao jiao (lower burner), as in vaginal bacterial infection, bacterial infection of the bowel, wet and smelly groin area, hot leg qi with swollen knees, legs and feet, and infectious jaundice.
Medical Function:


(1) antibiotic: it can inhibit Staphylococcus aureaus, pnumococcus, Shigella dysenteriae

(2) lower blood pressure

(3) anti Trichomoniasis

(4) lower blood sugar





Chemical ingredients:1. (berberine), (jatorrhizine), (magnoflorine), (phellodendrine), (candicine), (palmatine), (menisperine).

2. (obaculactone), (obacunone), (obacunonic acid).

3. (7-dehydrostigmasterol), (β-sitosterol), (campesterol).

4. (lumicaeruleic acid), (dictamnolide).


Dosage:3 to 12 g
Samples of formulae:zhi bai di huang wan, long dan xie gan tang, zhi xie tang for diarrhea due to acute bacterial infection
Modern Research:to be loaded.
Cautions:Do not use in cases of spleen deficient, weak digestion, lack of appetite. Use caution when there is no real heat.
