rids of phlegm, inhibits cough, treats bronchitis, rids of puss, for tonsilitis, and sore throat.

可袪痰、鎮咳，治療支氣管炎、排膿、化膿性疾病、扁桃線炎、咽喉痛。有 鬆痰排膿之效。

The root contains many saponins. Ingredients are separated with hydrolysis process: platycodigenin (main saponin), small amount of polygalacic acidplatycogenic acid A, platycogenic acid BC, platycogenic acid C. From saponins the following are separated: prosapogenin, 3-O-β-glucose, platycodoside C, platycogenin-3-O-β-glucoside platycodigenin, glucose, xylose. etc

 , 根含多种皂貳，水解后分得 ：桔 梗皂貳元（platycodigenin）,為主要的皂貳元，以及少量的新遠志酸（polygalacic acid）、桔梗酸A（platycogenic acid A）、桔梗酸B（platycogenic acid B）、桔梗酸C（platycogenic acid C）。此外，從皂貳中尚分得 前皂貳元（prosapogenin）,為次級　，是桔梗皂貳元-3-O-β-葡萄糖貳(platycogenin-3-O-β-glucoside)　 。由總皂中分得桔梗皂貳C（platycodoside C）,水解生成桔梗皂貳元（platycodigenin）和葡萄糖、木糖、鼠李糖、阿拉伯 糖（2:1:1:1）。以前報道的桔梗皂貳　（platycidin）經証明為一混合貳　。根另含α-菠菜甾醇、α-菠菜甾醇-β-D-葡萄糖　、樺 皮醇（betulin）、桔梗聚果糖（platycodinin）。根中尚含14种氨基酸，總含量達1.22%。

肺痈:桔梗湯、咳而胸满，振寒脉数，咽干不喝，时出浊唾腥臭，久久吐脓如米粥者，桔 梗湯 主之。

組成﹕桔梗 6 克﹐ 甘草12 克。 水煎服。

桔梗白散。

Not to use in case of yinxu (yin deficient)  with chronic cough, breathing difficulty and vomiting blood.

陰虛久嗽，氣逆及咳血者忌服。
