feng xiang 楓香

Pharmaceutical name: Fructus Liquidambaris
Latin botanical name: Liquidambar taiwaniana Hance
Pron. in Japanese: rorotsu
Pron. in Korean: nolotong
Pron. in Cantonese: lo lo tong
Other Names: jiu kong guo 九空果 , feng guo 楓果, feng shi 楓實
Common Name: sweetgum fruit
Distribution:

分佈﹕

Mainly in China: south of Yellow river: Sichuan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Hubei, all the way south to Guangdong, east to Taiwan, at low and mid sea level.

中國黃河以南,西至四川,東至台灣,南至廣東。台灣盛產於低、中海拔地帶。

Properties (characteristics) bitter, neutral
Channels (meridians) entered: liver, stomach
Actions & Indications: Fruit: for qi and blood stagnation, painful numbness of the whole body, stiffness and tightness of arms and legs, promote urination, rid of edema, piles, ringworms, eczema, irregular menses, hypomenorrhea,  lactation obstruction.

Amber: for boils with puss, taken internally, especially chronic boils with no heat.

周身痺痛,手腳拘攣,小便不利,水腫脹痛,月經不調,腰痛,經閉氣血壅滯乳汁不通癰疽痔漏疥癬濕疹等

Medical Function: anti-allergenic, antibiotic, promote urination

抗過敏作用,抑菌利尿

Chemical ingredients: cinnamic acid, L-borneol, resin, benzine (more to be loaded)
Dosage: Fruit: 9 to 12 g

Amber: 1 to 2 g in pills or powder form.

Samples of formulae: xiao jin dan

小金丹(外科全生集方)

 

Cautions: Not to use during pregnancy.

Not to be confused with a manufacture injection liquid called "lu lu tong 路路通" which is made from san qi.

 

Note: There are confusion in the Chinese and Japanese writings on feng xiang. Feng xiang zhi is not resin of feng shu. Feng xiang is Liquidambar taiwaniana Hance. Feng shu is Acer oliverianum Pbax. var nakaharai Hay. or Acer rubescens Hay. or Acer insulare Makino.

註﹕楓香脂不是楓樹脂。 楓香與楓樹是兩種不同的植物。

xiao jin dan (Source: wai ke quan sheng ji fang)

For removing phlegm and dampness, ridding of blood stasis, for lymphatic tumor, chronic lymphatic leukemia. Long term usage is effective for bone TB. Do not use during pregnancy.

composition: feng xiang zhi, cao wu tou, wu ling zhi, di long, tu mu bie, 15 g each; ru xiang, mo yao, dang gui, 7.5 g each; she xiang 0.3 g, mo tan 0.12 g. Make into pill. Take 5 g per day.

小金丹(外科全生集方)

化痰袪涇去瘀通絡作用,主治一切痰核流注貼骨陰疽治骨結核淋巴瘤治骨結核 慢性淋巴細胞性白血病

處方﹕楓香脂﹐草烏頭﹐五靈脂﹐地龍﹐土木蟞﹐各15公分﹐

乳香﹐沒藥﹐當歸﹐各7公分半﹐麝香0。3公分﹐墨炭0。12公

分。為丸。每服5公分。陳酒送服。治骨結核。久服有效。

孕婦忌服

Editor note: tu mu bie, di long, and cao wu tou are toxic. The usage should be supervised by a qualified herb doctor.
