Note: This medicine was differentiated into  po xiao 朴硝﹐ pi xiao 皮硝﹐ xuan ming fen 玄明粉 (yuan ming fen 元明粉). Mang xiao was considered to be purer and yuan ming fen or xuan ming fen was considered the purest. Now the chemical is purified during production.  Xuan ming fen is anhydrous sodium sulfate.

In prescription, if the crude chemical is being used, it is written as pi xiao (皮硝)。

過去有朴硝、皮硝、玄明粉（元明粉）之分，認為朴硝雜質較多，芒硝質較純，玄明粉質最純，現均為精制品，不再區分。如需用粗制品，則處方注明“皮硝”。

1. constipation with dark urine, fullness and pain in abdomen.

藥理:

promote movement of intestine and create diarrhea

用量﹕

mang xiao: 10 to 20 g.

xuan ming fen 3 to 9 g.

常用配方:

禁忌﹕

not to use in cases of pregnancies or those with pixu (spleen deficient) condition.

脾虛胃寒者及孕婦忌服。
