monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)

Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme in the cells of most tissues that catalyzes the oxidation of monoamines such as epinephrine,  norepinephrine and serotonin.

MAOI is a drug that interferes with the action of the enzyme monoamine oxdase in the brain to  slow down the breaking down of certain neurotransmitters such as epinephrine,  norepinephrine and serotonin. It is being used in the treatment o depression.

isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate)
