monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) By: Joe Hing Kwok Chu Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme in the cells of most tissues that catalyzes the oxidation of monoamines such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and serotonin. MAOI is a drug that interferes with the action of the enzyme monoamine oxdase in the brain to slow down the breaking down of certain neurotransmitters such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and serotonin.
