Classification Amyloids

Amyloid is protein consisted primarily of protein fibers that possesses the characteristic of starch. It is waxy, translucent, and is deposited in various organ of animals in certain diseases

 

Today the classification of amyloid is based on biochemistry.

 

Amyloid is represented by a capital A. Then the letters that follow the "A" denotes the type of fiber protein.

 

Names of amyloids Fibril Protein Diseases
AA (secondary amyloidosis) amyloid associated  
AL (primary amyloidosis) amyloid light chain  
beta protein precursor Alzheimer's disease
APrP   prion protein Kuru, CJD(Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease), Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome,  fatal familial insomnia, mad cow diseases
ATTr (hereditary amyloidosis) transthyretin Amyloidosis that affect the heart
