| Herbs to Avoid During Pregnancy Translated by: Joe Hing Kwok Chu Use caution when using the following herbs: Herbs that can enhance the contraction of the uterus and may cause miscarriage: herbs that clear heat and promote diarrhea: da huang, mang xiao, fan xie ye herbs that are drastic: san leng, e zhu, chang shan herbs that promote menses, rid of blood stasis: tao ren, hong hua, xi cao herbs that are very acrid and very hot: zhi ban xia, rou gui, fu zi, gan jiang herbs that promote urination: mu tong, bai mao gen, tong cao, yao mai herbs that are common but posses strong effect like: niu xi, yuan hu, mu dan, niu huang, dai zhe shi yi yi ren can promote contraction of the uterus mai ya can inhibit production of milk
Do not use the following herbs during pregnancy: Herbs that are very toxic: fu zi, zao jiao ci, nan xing, wu tou, ban mao, ye ge, mercury, arsenic trioxide, ba dou, yuan hua, da ji, lu sha . Herbs that can be toxic when used in large amount : shui zhi, mang chong, wu gong, xiong huang (realgar), quan niu zi, gan qi, xia zao jia, xie xiang.
Do not use the following formulae during pregnancy: xue fu zhu yu tang, zhen gu zhi jin dan, fu yuan huo xue tang, tao he chen qi tang, qi li san, yun gong san, niu huang jie du wan, da huo luo wan, xiao huo luo wan, liu shen wan, zhi bao wan, tie taa wan, xu jun huo luo wan, su he xiang wan, niu huang qing xin wan, zhi xue dan, hei si dan, kai xiong shun qi dan, xiao jin dan, yu zhen san. 1.孕婦必須慎用的中藥材：
容易增加子宮收縮造成流產，如大黃，芒硝，番瀉葉等清熱瀉下藥物；三菱，莪朮，常山等藥性猛烈的藥物等等，一般也列為孕婦禁忌，避免引起流產。至於行氣破帶的枳實，通經去瘀的桃仁，紅花，茜草，大辛大熱的制半夏，肉桂，附子，乾薑，和具有滑利作用的木通，白茅根，通草，瞿麥等，以及常用藥物如牛膝，元胡，牡丹皮，牛黃，鉤藤 ， 代赭石等，雖非屬於大毒或瀉下，藥性猛烈的藥物，但孕婦在使用時則須格外謹慎。
薏苡芢的效用為利水利尿，實驗証明對動物子宮有興奮作用，能快速促進子宮收縮，所以孕婦並不適於食用。麥芽效用為促進消化，澱粉分解，但這些成分卻會造成孕婦退乳。
2.孕婦忌服的藥物：
附 子，皂角刺，南星，烏頭，斑 蝥，野葛，水銀，砒霜，巴 豆，芫花，
大 戟，滷砂，是具有很強毒性的藥物，對孕婦及胎兒的傷害極大，因此孕婦禁用，以免危害到母子生命的安全。
水蛭，虻 蟲，蜈蚣，雄黃，牽牛子，乾漆，蟹爪甲，麝香 ，於大劑量時會顯現毒性。
3.孕婦忌服的方劑：
血府逐瘀 湯 ，正骨紫金丹，復原活血湯，桃核承氣湯，七釐散，運功散，牛黃解毒丸，大活絡丸，小活絡丸，六神丸，至寶丸，跌打丸，舒筋活絡丸，蘇合香丸，牛黃清心丸，紫雪丹，黑錫丹，開胸順氣丹，小金丹，玉真散，其成份含有孕婦禁用的藥物。
