Tyrosine is one of the twenty two amino acids use by the cells to synthesize proteins.  It is abundant in cheese and in many types of protein.

 In dopaminergic cells in the brain, tyrosine is converted to levodopa (L-dopa) by the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase.Tyrosine hydroxylase involves in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter dopamine from L-dopa.

In the adrenal medulla, tyrosine is converted into the catecholamine hormones norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and epinephrine (adrenaline).

In the thyroid hormones,  triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) , the production involves tyrosine.
