Causes of Memory Loss

Compiled and Edited by: Joe Hing Kwok Chu

Causes:

  1. Alzheimer's disease

  2. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) caused by prions. Prions are caused by mutated genes or also can cause by prion diseased feed animals like cows or sheep with scrapie.

  3. Parkinson's diseases

  4. Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB)

  5. Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  6. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

  7. Toxin from shellfish caused by harmful algal bloom (red tide)

  8. Blood stasis (blood clots)

  9. Chronic infection

  10. Depression (mania or depressed mood)

  11. shenyangxu (kidney yang deficient)腎陽虛

  12. shenyinxu (kidney yin deficient)  腎陰虛

  13. Pixu (spleen deficient) causes over active of the enzyme AchE that turns off the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine drastically. Pixu (spleen deficient) causes weak digestion, which promotes yeast infection. Chronic yeast infection can cause systemic infection and activate antimicrobial peptide. Beta amyloid, an antimicrobial peptide[1] has been suspected in damaging the dendrites of nerve cells and causes Alzheimer's disease. About AChE, see Huperzia serrata.

  14. Head injuries

  15. low testosterone (men and women)

  16. Tumors in the brain

  17. Abnormal pressure in the brain

  18. Vitamin B12 deficiency

  19. Side effects of medicines or drug inter-actions

  20. Substance abuse including chronic alcohol [2]intoxication.

  21. Encephalitis (infection of the brain)

  22. HIV/AIDS

To investigate the influence of spleen deficiency on memory. The model rats of spleen deficiency were made by diarrhea and fatigue, and then were administered sijunzi decoction, the levels of AchE, NOS, NO in the brain tissue were tested. The result showed that the levels of AchE in spleen deficiency group were obviously higher than that of control group and sijunzi decoction group (P<0.01, P<0.05), and NOS, NO was significantly lower than that of another two groups (P<0.05). Conclusions: Spleen deficiency depresses rats' ability of learning and memory.
